James Woods 1947 – Present
Part-time Rhode Island resident James Woods is a prolific American actor that has appeared in such movies as ‘The Way We Were’, ‘Casino’, ‘The Virgin Suicides’, ‘Clerks’, ‘Ghosts of Mississippi’, and Disney’s ‘Hercules’, as well as many television episodes and video game voice-overs.
H.P. Lovecraft 1890 – 1937
Born in Providence, RI, horror/fantasy writer H.P. Lovecraft is most well-known for the ‘Necronomicon’ and his ‘Cthulu Mythos’,, which began to develop a cult following in teh early 1940’s. Today, Lovecraft is considered one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th century.
Cormac McCarthy 1933 – Present
Born in Providence, RI novelist and playwright Cormac McCarthy has written ten Wester, Post-Apocalyptic and Southern Gothic novels, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, ‘The Road’. McCarthy has also won the National Book Award for his novel, ‘All the Pretty Horses’.
Stephen Hopkins 1707 – 1785
Born in Providence, RI, American political leader Stephen Hopkins was both the Chief Justice and Governor of the early English colony of Rhode Island, as well as one of the founding fathers to sign the Declaration of Independence. Hopkins was also the first chancellor of early Brown University.
Abby Aldrich Rockefeller 1874 – 1948
Born in Providence, RI, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller was the second-generation matriarch of the world-famous Rockefeller family. Abby was known for her philanthropy, particularly for the birth of NYC’s Museum of Modern Art (MOMA). Abby was an avid art collector who began collecting the works of such noteworthy artists as Degas, Van Gogh, Matissa, Picasso and Cezanne as early as the 1920’s.
Mena Suvari 1979 – Present
Born in Newport, RI, actress, model and fashion designer Mena Suvari is most well-known for her role in the films ‘American Beauty’ and ‘American Pie’.
Ruth Buzzi 1936 – Present
Born in Westerly, RI, comedienne and actress Ruth Buzzi is most well-known for her roles in ‘Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In’, ‘The Carol Burnett Show’, the ‘Dean Martin Roasts’ and the ‘Flip Wilson Show’.
